On 20 February, the West Avia test environment in Rengonharju showcased a concrete example of how regional companies are jointly developing dual-use solutions aimed at export markets.
The event was attended by the Ambassador of Poland to Finland, H.E. Tomasz Chłoń, who witnessed the first drive of the Laykka unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) developed by Esteri Group, equipped with Artificer Group’s patented Pinecone wheels.
Laykka is an unmanned ground vehicle designed for both civilian and defence applications. Its enhanced mobility is enabled by the innovative Pinecone wheel technology, which allows reliable operation in demanding terrain conditions.
According to Artificer Group’s CTO Taneli Poranen, the Pinecone wheel features an adjustable ground pressure system based on its cellular structure and can function similarly to a tracked system when needed. Unlike pneumatic tyres, it is resistant to punctures, reduces ground impact, and improves vehicle stability — a key advantage in remote-controlled operations using virtual reality systems.
“The Pinecone wheel was specifically developed for demanding environments. We wanted a solution that combines durability, terrain protection and operational stability. This enables reliable mobility in conditions where traditional tyres simply do not perform,” Poranen explains.
“Testing in an environment like West Avia provides us with valuable data and confidence that the solution works in real operational scenarios,” he adds.
The overall system was complemented by a semi-trailer built by CLT Life, inside which Laykka’s control system has been integrated. Together, the mobile command unit, the unmanned vehicle and the new wheel technology form a modular and scalable solution with strong potential for various civil and security applications.
The event also featured Trailander’s rescue sled solution, which the Ambassador had the opportunity to test personally. Designed for demanding conditions, the rescue sled complements the overall system where mobility, safety and operational readiness come together.
Business Collaboration Driving Export-Ready Dual-Use Solutions
According to Poranen, West Avia’s test environment enables companies to take collaborative development to the next level.
“This demonstration was a significant milestone for us. When different companies’ solutions are combined into one functional system, it creates a competitive package also for international markets,” Poranen states.
West Avia serves as a platform where companies, technology developers and educational institutions can jointly test, validate and commercialise solutions. Collaboration and practical pilot activities lay the foundation for comprehensive systems targeting export markets and international partnerships.
