Seinäjoki Airport Area Set for Growth

Targeting Multi-Million Investments in the Seinäjoki Airport Area

The City of Seinäjoki and the Municipality of Ilmajoki have signed a cooperation agreement to jointly develop the Rengonharju airport area. The aim is to transform the area into a hub for traffic, air logistics, and related business activities — enhancing regional vitality and attracting new investments and jobs.

Key goals include:

  • Increasing airport usage by at least 10% annually over the next three years
  • Attracting over €5 million in new investments within five years
  • Creating 50 new jobs in the airport area by 2030

“This agreement allows us to accelerate development more efficiently. Now it’s time for proactive sales, marketing, and commercialization of the existing infrastructure. The airport and its surroundings offer clear synergies to support long-term sustainable operations,” says Jaakko Kiiskilä, Mayor of Seinäjoki.

Although the airport is located within the municipality of Ilmajoki, land ownership also extends into Seinäjoki. The infrastructure is owned by the Rengonharju Foundation, while operations are managed by Seinäjoen Lentoasema Oy, a mostly privately owned company with stakeholders including the City of Seinäjoki, the Municipality of Ilmajoki, and the South Ostrobothnia Wellbeing Services County.

The area is already home to key organizations such as SEDU’s logistics training unit and FinnHEMS’ helicopter base.

“This agreement is a welcome step forward after years of negotiations and various development projects. We hope it leads to long-term progress,” says Leena Perämäki, CEO of Into Seinäjoki.

The new partnership was officially launched at the event “Regional Economic Impacts of Air Traffic in South Ostrobothnia,” where a comprehensive report on the role of air traffic in regional growth was also released.

Representatives from Kuortane Olympic Training Center and SDC Ventures (Data Center) shared their views on how air connectivity supports business and attracts international investment.
